KHRP Fact-Finding Delegation Conducts Diyarbakir Press Conference

On 7 July at 1.30pm KHRP, BHRC, Index on Censorship, Article 19 and University of Limerick held a press conference for Kurdish and Turkish television, radio and print media at the Southeast Media Society in the Kurdish province of Diyarbakır, south-east Turkey.

The delegation, headed by KHRP Advisory Board Member Louise Christian, gave an hour-long briefing to the media about its preliminary findings from their current mission to the region investigating ‘Freedom of Media in Turkey’.

Commenting on the mission, KHRP Executive Director Kerim Yildiz stated on Friday: “the continuing restrictions placed on the media in Turkey, particularly Kurdish and other minority media, silence the voice of considerable sections of Turkish society. Much progress remains to be made for true media freedom to be achieved in Turkey. This fact-finding mission is an opportunity to pinpoint some of the main obstacles faced by diverse media institutions in Turkey, so that recommendations for meaningful steps towards a fully independent and inclusive media can be made.”

KHRP is closely monitoring the delegation’s progress, and a report of the fact-finding mission will be made available later this summer.
